In a battle for the vacant IBF World Lightweight Championship, Richard Commey, 28-2 (25 KOs), of Ghana, took on Russian Isa Chaniev, 13-2 (6 KOs). The fight went down at The Star in Frisco, Texas, the world headquarters for the Dallas Cowboys, and was broadcasted live on ESPN. Commey dropped Chaniev with a huge straight right hand in the latter part of the round. Chaniev was visibly wobbly when getting to his feet but referee Lawrence Cole allowed the fight to continue.
Commey immediately dropped Chaniev with a big left hook in the second round, seconds after it started. Chaniev was again able to get to his feet but was extremely hurt. Commeywent in for the kill and was able to secure the stoppage with a combination of unanswered shots capped by a right hand that forced the referee to step in. The fight officially went down as a technical knockout victory for Commey at 39 seconds of round two. He moves ahead to face Vasyl Lomachenko in a unification fight.
